---- PROMYS 2017 ----

Students, counselors and faculty at PROMYS 2017

2017 Breakout Fellow

PROMYS is delighted to award the 2017 Breakout Fellowship to PROMYS to Haneul Shin of River Edge, New Jersey. Haneul attends Bergen County Academies where she is a rising junior.

Terence Tao, Richard Taylor, and Jacob Lurie, recipients of the inaugural Breakthrough Prizes in Mathematics, generously established the Breakout Fellowships to PROMYS in late 2014. The PROMYS alum community then matched the Breakout Fellowship donations to create and fully fund the Breakout Fellowship Endowment which will bring one Breakout Fellow to PROMYS every summer in perpetuity.

2017 Mehta Fellowships to PROMYS!

PROMYS is excited to award eight 2017 Tara and Jasubhai Mehta Fellowships to PROMYS for talented young mathematicians in India: three first-year Mehta Fellows and five Returning Mehta Fellows.

The new first-year Mehta Fellows are Devansh Sehta from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, Aman Agrawal also from from Indore, and Siddharth Sridhar from Chennai in Tamil Nadu. The Fellows were selected from a very strong pool of Mehta Fellowship applicants. Finalists were interviewed by alumni Dr. Abhinav Kumar and Dr. Ila Varma.

Returning Mehta Fellows in 2017 are Arya Vadnere from Pune in Maharashtra, Adit Vishnu Pathirissery Manoj from Thrissur in Kerala, Kushagr Mohan Ahuja from Chandigarh in Union Territory, and Soumen Ghosh from Katwa in West Bengal who is returning as a junior counselor. In addition, Sabir Shaik is returning as a counselor. Sabir was a Mehta Fellow at PROMYS 2015 and a Returning Fellow as a junior counselor in 2016. Soumen has just completed his first year as an undergraduate at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. Sabir has completed his second year as an undergraduate at the Chennai Mathematical Institute.

The participation of these students, all exceptionally talented in mathematics, is thanks to the generosity of Nicholas Nash, the Indira Foundation and Morph.org, the Mehta Fellowship sponsors. The Mehta Fellowships are full scholarships to PROMYS which also cover round-trip airfare from India, visa fees and any required books.

2017 Yongren Fellowship for student in China

The PROMYS Foundation is delighted to announce that the inaugural Yongren (永仁) Fellowship to PROMYS has been awarded to Zehong Zong from Zhengzhou, in Henan Province in east-central China.

Funded by a generous family foundation, the Yongren Fellowship was established to enable the participation in PROMYS of a mathematically talented low-income student from China. The Fellowship includes a full scholarship to PROMYS (including all tuition, room and board) plus roundtrip travel from China, visa application fees, and any required books.

In coming to PROMYS, Zehong hopes for “an intellectual adventure to do some challenging and inspiring mathematics.”

PROMYS Europe 2017

PROMYS Europe, an offshoot of PROMYS for European students, had a highly successful first two summers in 2015 and 2016. PROMYS Europe 2017 runs from July 9 to August 19 at Wadham College, University of Oxford.

PROMYS Europe is a partnership of PROMYS with the Mathematical Institute of the University of Oxford; the Clay Mathematics Institute (CMI); and Wadham College, University of Oxford.

Thanks to independent funding from its partners and private donors, PROMYS Europe offers full and partial financial aid and, as at PROMYS, all families are asked to pay less than the full cost of participation.

Alum TEDx Talk: "To Think Deeply of Simple Things"

Hirsh Jain was invited to give a TEDx talk, in November at The York School, for students "Taking On the World."  Hirsh titled his talk: "To Think Deeply of Simple Things."

Hirsh writes, "This talk is based on what I've learned at three summers at the Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists.  This program, held at Boston University every summer, has fostered my growth as not only a mathematician, but as an intellectual, to an unbelievable extent.  Being able to conduct research and to take a creative approach to math has enabled me to see the way that structure and beauty come together to elicit a true understanding of numbers."

    Here's his video:
