The Mathematics of Computer Graphics: Professor Marjory Baruch, Syracuse University

Geometry and Symmetry: Professor Steven Rosenberg, Boston University

Guest Lectures

The following mathematicians delivered PROMYS Guest Lectures this summer.

Keith Conrad (University of Connecticut): Impossibility by modular arithmetic
Tadashi Tokieda (Stanford University/University of Cambridge): Applying physics to mathematics
Rob Gross (Boston College): Summing It Up:  Amazon Rank 20,948
Ila Varma (Harvard and Columbia Universities): Hasse’s local-global principle
Lionel Levine (Cornell University): The future of prediction

2016 Breakout Fellow

Professor Glenn Stevens with Barry Xu, the 2016 Breakout Fellow

PROMYS was delighted to award the 2016 Breakout Fellowship to PROMYS to Barry Xu of Alameda High School in Alameda, California.

Terence Tao, Richard Taylor, and Jacob Lurie, recipients of the inaugural Breakthrough Prizes in Mathematics, generously established the Breakout Fellowships to PROMYS in late 2014. The PROMYS alum community then matched the Breakout Fellowship donations to create and fully fund the Breakout Fellowship Endowment which will bring one Breakout Fellow to PROMYS every summer in perpetuity.

2016 Mehta Fellowships!

(Back, left to right) Professor David Fried, Arya Vadnere,  Adit Vishnu Pathirissery Manoj, Professor Glenn Stevens, (Front, left to right) Shubham Aggarwal,Soumen Ghosh, Sabir Shaik, and Neelima Borade

PROMYS was excited to be able to award four 2016 Tara and Jasubhai Mehta Fellowships to PROMYS for low-income students from India. In addition, the two 2015 Mehta Fellows returned to PROMYS this summer: Shubham Aggarwal as a Returning Fellow and Sabir Shaik, about to start his second undergraduate year at the Chennai Mathematical Institute, as a Junior Counselor.

The four new Mehta Fellows to PROMYS are Arya Vadnere from Pune, Maharashtra; Adit Vishnu Pathirissery Manoj from Thrissur, Kerala; Neelima Borade also from Pune; and Soumen Ghosh from Katwa, West Bengal.

Without the generosity of Nicholas Nash, the Indira Foundation and Morph.org, the Mehta Fellowship sponsors, these six students, all exceptionally talented in mathematics, would have been unable to participate in PROMYS since international students are not eligible for regular need-based financial aid at PROMYS. The Mehta Fellowships to PROMYS are for mathematically talented low-income students in India and cover tuition, room and board, round-trip travel from India, visa fees, and any required books.

2016 Trustee Fellowship

The PROMYS Foundation was extremely pleased to award a 2016 Trustee Fellowship to Roshan Padaki. The Trustee Fellowship is a full scholarship to PROMYS funded thanks to the generosity of the PROMYS alum community. Roshan graduated this year from Lexington High School in Lexington, Massachusetts. This was Roshan's third summer at PROMYS.

PROMYS Europe 2016

PROMYS Europe, an offshoot of PROMYS for European students, had a highly successful first summer in 2015. The dates of PROMYS Europe 2016 are July 10 to August 20. Twenty-one first-year students, three returning students, and seven counselors have immersed themselves in PROMYS mathematics for six weeks at the University of Oxford.

PROMYS Europe is a partnership of PROMYS with the Mathematical Institute of the University of Oxford; the Clay Mathematics Institute (CMI); and Wadham College, University of Oxford.

Thanks to independent funding from its partners and private donors, PROMYS Europe offers full and partial financial aid and, as at PROMYS, all families are asked to pay less than the full cost of participation.

PROMYS Europe 2016 participants show their countries of origin

Dr. Vicky Neale, Whitehead Lecturer in the Mathematical Institute and at Balliol College, Oxford University is offering an advanced seminar as she did in 2015.

Professor Sir Andrew Wiles gave a PROMYS Europe Guest Lecture on Eliptic Curves. Additional guest lectures have been given so far this summer by Dr Jennifer Balakrishnan (University of Oxford), Thomas Bloom (University of Bristol), Professor Sarah Zerbes (University College London), and Dr. Kevin Hughes (University of Bristol).

Alum TEDx Talk: "To Think Deeply of Simple Things"

Hirsh Jain was invited to give a TEDx talk, in November at The York School, for students "Taking On the World."  Hirsh titled his talk: "To Think Deeply of Simple Things."

Hirsh writes, "This talk is based on what I've learned at three summers at the Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists.  This program, held at Boston University every summer, has fostered my growth as not only a mathematician, but as an intellectual, to an unbelievable extent.  Being able to conduct research and to take a creative approach to math has enabled me to see the way that structure and beauty come together to elicit a true understanding of numbers."

    Here's his video:
